Hello, I’m Sarah Spiegler, and I’m excited to announce my candidacy for the Town of Beaufort Commissioner. I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I have proudly called Beaufort, NC home for the past 12 years, after moving here two days after Hurricane Irene in 2011. I am an Ohio native and moved to NC in 2010 to further my education. I attended the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, where I received my Master of Environmental and Coastal Management in 2012. I am currently employed as the Coastal Resilience Specialist for NC Sea Grant, with an office at the NC State University Center for Marine Sciences and Technology in Morehead City. In this position, I act as an educator, science researcher, and community engagement specialist focusing on the most pressing social, economic, and environmental concerns for coastal NC. I have worked on issues related to coastal resilience for over 10 years with partners and stakeholders in coastal NC, regionally in the Southeast and Gulf Coast, and nationally. Additionally, I worked aboard the Lookout Cruises sailboat in Beaufort for almost 10 years from 2013-2022.
I love the Beaufort community that I have called home since moving here in 2011, and my passion is working to protect our beautiful coastline and community for current and future Beaufort residents. I believe it is vital to embrace change, while preserving our small town culture and Beaufort’s natural beauty for all of our residents and visitors.
In other exciting news, earlier this year my partner Jacob Boyd and I welcomed a beautiful baby boy named Averett—he was born in January at Carteret General Hospital. I am excited for Averett to grow up in beautiful Carteret County, and preserving and strengthening our unique small town culture and coastal resources for future generations is an important task for all Beaufort Commissioners.
My extensive and diverse experiences have provided me with valuable insights into leveraging my expertise to improve execution of project management and implementation. I am skilled in leadership that includes working with partnerships to improve organization, effectiveness, collaboration, and communication, while considering balancing competing interests with organizational missions. I firmly believe that my experience and skills can contribute significantly to the Town of Beaufort Board of Commissioners. I sincerely hope for the opportunity to serve you and the Town as a member of the board.
